October Activity: Sowing Wheat

Unlike the barefooted and scantily clothed field workers of summer (see the images of Threshing Grain and Cutting and Binding Wheat), the booted man sowing wheat in autumnal weather is fully clad in a tunic and hat. He holds the end of his apron up in one hand to make a bag for the grain, broadcasting the seed with the other hand as he paces a freshly furrowed field. A large sack of wheat with a scoop for replenishing the grain in his apron sits on the ground behind him, and the harrow used to prepare the soil lies in front.
