Orris blooms in a bed devoted to aromatic plants in the foreground; the violet iris in the background grows in a bed dedicated to plants used as artists’ materials. Although orris is sometimes designated as white iris, the flowers are actually a very pale blue. The orris usually blooms earlier in May than the purple iris, but they bloomed together this year. The unseasonably warm weather in very early spring caused many plants to bloom early or out of sequence.
