Inula helenium

This handsome perennial herb is probably of Asian origin. Elecampane is found in the wild in both Europe and the United States, where it was introduced by the early settlers. The root has a long history of use as a foodstuff and a medicinal; the plant is still commonly grown in modern gardens for its ornamental qualities.
