Cornus mas

The cornelian cherry planted against the east wall of Bonnefont garden has grown there for many years. It is now heavily pruned to control the spread of the canopy, which had doubled in size in the course of the last ten years and was outgrowing the available space. This relative of our native dogwood is the first tree in the gardens to flower. The minute yellow blossoms that cover the naked twigs and branches appear in early March.
