Cornus mas fruit (detail)

The bright red cornels fall from the tree over the course of several weeks in late July and early August, ripening to a dark ruby-red only after they fall to the ground. The tart fruit is made into jams and conserves in Europe and in Turkey, but is not commonly eaten in the United States.
