A monarch feeding on Anemone japonica. Although monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweeds, especially the common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca, and the swamp milkweed, A. incarnata, the adults feed on nectar from a variety of late-summer and autumn-flowering species.
It is difficult to see the markings that differentiate male and female monarchs in a ventral view like this one.
