Pisum sativum arvense 'Blue Pod Capucijners'

The ‘Blue Pod Capucijner’ variety grown at The Cloisters is derived from late medieval Dutch strains of field pea. Hildegard characterizes peas as cold and phlegmatic in nature. She considers that they are beneficial for persons of a warm temperament, giving them courage, but warns that they are not good for persons of a cold nature, as they produce too much mucus. (Physica, Chapter VI).
