Nettles' Stinging Hairs

The stinging hairs seen in this detail inject a toxin when touched. Proverbially, a firm grasp will suppress the hypodermic action that would otherwise pump venom into the hand of the gatherer. Despite the venom, nettles are edible and nutritious. They were and are cooked and eaten as a spring green, and are widely used in folk medicine.
