Maidenhair fern (detail)

Rainwater falling on the ferns in this genus forms beads on the pinnules or leaflets, rather than sheeting their surface. Adiantum is from the ancient Greek, and means “unwettable.” This water repellency is the plant’s own mechanism for protecting itself against excess moisture.
