Mentha x piperita

The “x” in the botanical name Mentha x piperita indicates that the plant is a cross between two different species of mint. Mint hybridize freely in the wild. As early as the ninth century, the Benedictine scholar, poet, and gardener, Walahfrid Strabo, noted that there were as many kinds of mint as there were sparks from Vulcan’s forge.
