The Zodiacal Sign of Scorpio

The ancients named the constellation Scorpius after a perceived resemblance between the curve of seven bright stars at its eastern edge and the tail and stinger of a scorpion. According to Teresa PĂ©rez-Higuera, the classical origin of the name was forgotten, and medieval texts gave more fanciful explanations for the designation. The Breviari d’Amor, an encyclopedic grammar composed in the thirteenth century, explains that as the sun descends through this sign, the air that descends with it fails to be warmed sufficiently, rendering it as harmful and dangerous to humans below as the poisonous scorpion.
