Musician Steve Miller (of the Steve Miller Band) was great friends with the luthier James D’Aquisto (1935–95). This concert features Miller along with jazz greats Howard Alden, Jim Hall, and Bucky Pizzarelli in an evening of jazz, the genre of music most associated with the archtop guitars of James D’Aquisto.

An evening of standards interpreted by one of today’s foremost guitarists and his jazz ensemble. The John Pizzarelli Quartet will pay homage to swing music of the type first played on archtop guitars like those made by John D’Angelico. Featuring: John Pizzarelli (guitar and vocals); Larry Fuller (piano); Martin Pizzarelli (bass); and Tony Tedesco (drums).

This afternoon event will include the world premiere of Anthony Wilson’s composition The Four Seasons, performed on the Four Seasons guitars created by John Monteleone. Featuring guitarists Anthony Wilson, Julian Lage, Steve Cardenas, and Chico Pinheiro and followed by a conversation between John Monteleone and the composer.

Curator Jayson Kerr Dobney will present the works of John D’Angelico, James D’Aquisto, and John Monteleone against the backdrop of the long tradition of Italian stringed-instrument making that has thrived for more than four hundred years.

Cinema 16 is a film and performance series, founded and curated by Molly Surno. Melding the worlds of art, music, and film, Cinema 16 endeavors to revive the silent film era, when live music would accompany black-and-white films. Inspired by the exhibition, this Cinema 16 event features short experimental films evoking the Italian American experience, matched with a specially commissioned, string-based score written and played live by band members from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Oneida.

Department of Musical Instruments


The Department of Musical Instruments offers a series of free concerts that highlight its extensive and encyclopedic collection, sometimes in conjunction with special exhibitions, the permanent collection, or other related topics. These programs are free with Museum admission and do not require tickets or reservations. The Museum’s Education Department also occasionally schedules free concerts.
