Fireback

Fireback
France, Normandy (Orne), Alen??on, late 15th or early 16th century
Cast iron
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Cloisters Collection, 1946 (46.195)

Arms: Azure three Fleurs-de-lis Or (France Modern)

The royal coat of arms at the core of this heraldic achievement is further enhanced by the addition of a crown, a collar of knighthood, and two winged stags as supporters. The basic shield, however, remains in stark contrast to the complex scheme of territorial and genealogical quarterings in a Hapsburg shield on view in the same gallery.

See the Collection Database for an image of the fireback in context.
