Juvenile ivy

The three-lobed leaves of the juvenile form of Hedera helix are very variable, and there are now hundreds of named forms. Despite the bold and simple grisaille reduction of the ivy plant seen here, the species is immediately recognizable. Stylized ivy is a common decorative motif in other medieval genres, such as manuscript illumination. Ivy is an iconographically significant plant as well as a decorative one.
